DNN acquired ActiveSocial, which is a different company.
Our modules do use the core profile attributes, so it all works together anyway. This is an alternative to whatever Core modules DNN releases.

Have you made a public statement as to your expectation of the upcoming Active Social integration into DNN? What is the future of VivoSocial? Where do you see it fitting in the DNN community and what’s your opinion on how the two overlap/differ/compete/compliment?
I'm very interested in starting a social community, but am torn between AS & VS. From downloading the demo and reading what exists of the documentation it's certainly had a great deal of time and effort invested in it, the question is (from a purely selfish perspective) will the time and effort I will need to place into planning and configuring the site/system ultimately be wasted if VS collapses under the weight/popularity of the new AS integration (I hope not as I like what I've seen so far). To start a project and then have the product you built it on no longer be available/supported is horrible and I don't want to be left high and dry and try to recreate and migrate an existing community to another platform (at which point I would expect to lose 50% of my users).
I wouldn't expect you to say "start using Active Social then..." given your huge investment of time and truthfully even if you were planning on tossing VS in 6 months you probably wouldn't say, so I guess what I'm looking for it some encouraging words that lead me to believe VS will be around for many years to come and that it's continues development won't fall behind the needs of the social landscape.
I'm perfectly willing pay my fair share and contribute where I can, but the success of my project likely hinges on my choice of social platform - I'm just being perfectly honest and would appreciate the same from someone on your end :)
Thanks for all the great work you've done so far and thanks for taking the time to (hopefully) read this, TJ

We have yet to make a public statement about Active Social simply because we are not sure of which or if all of the features will be in the community edition, nor when it will be officially released. Also, while Active Social has certainly been a competitor, our modules have been around longer and are certainly more robust than their offering. However, I have attached a document to this reply that shows the differences of the main modules that we are aware of. You also need to consider that we have many more modules that perform functionality that is not included in the attached document.
Indeed, we have spent an enormous amount of time on our products. We have been building these modules for about 6 years now, if you count the previous company we were all involved with (Venexus). I remember having a conversation with Will Morgenweck in 2008, shortly after he purchased DNN Fusion (the original source of what became Active Social) and discussing how we had become competitors. We released our commercial version of our software before he even switched the code over to reference his company. When we switched from Venexus to VivoWare, we went open source with all of our modules, and this definitely put a damper on their sales. I cannot tell you how many people came to us simply because we were more open to modifying and customizing our modules than Active Modules. While Active Social is a great product, I think it is kind of obvious why Active Modules sold the company to DotNetNuke.
One thing to consider is that now that DotNetNuke owns Active Social is how often it will actually be updated. I remember from the first DNN Dev Connections conference in Las Vegas in 2007, they announced they were going to make DNN social. They finally released their user profile a couple of years later, but there was not really anything social about it. Even since Active Modules was purchased, we were told it would be in the 6.0 version, then 6.1, and now 6.2? It’s 2012 in a few days and we are still waiting. So, even if it is released, how often do you really think they will be releasing new features or updates? We already have more features and I can guarantee that we will be more active with our releases and new features than DNN will be. I can only imagine that the innovation of Active Social will slow down to a crawl, simply because this is not their true focus. VivoWare IS social software and this is all we do. Worst case, we may finally have some competition that leads to more innovation.
As far as your concern that VivoWare could collapse, that is certainly understandable. However, our source code is available on CodePlex and would be available even if the company disappeared. What I can tell you is that we have no plans to sell or close our company at this time. We have been around for a long time in the DNN community and plan on being here for many more years to come.

Thanks for the quick reply, I can certainly see you've invested a lot into the product and appreciate the move to open sourcing it. I'll be spending some quality time with VivoSocial I think, I can see a lot great things in there but also see (or not see as the case may be) a number things I would have expected to be included - perhaps they are there and I haven't spent enough time just yet to understand how it all hangs together.
I think one of the initial problems that could be overcome is a quick overview page somewhere that outlines how the modules hang together and their potential uses - the module collection is quick overwhelming and of course I can see how some of the module names could confuse people. As a number of other modules in the DNN community now post to the Active Social activity stream, does/can VivoSocial mimic the same API so these modules can post to VivoSocial in the same manner as ActiveSocial? And where would you like feature requests/suggestions to be posted (Forums, Tracker etc.)?
Thanks again for being open and candid with your responses...

We have started a Wiki but have not had a chance to update it lately. But it gives overview of all the main modules. I can be found here:
http://www.vivoware.com/tabid/120/IndexId/3316/Default.aspx
The main thing you should look at is VivoSocial (the big zip) itself. We have provided this as a reference for you as a working model. It has several different templates for some of our modules already configured on pages. You could use this as a reference when configuring your own site.
You should look at templates for SearchDirectory. There you will find several different options for list views.
We do provide an API via our WebServices module. Specifically there is an API for Messaging that you would use to add to timeline as described. You can read more via our wiki post:

Please post all bugs, issues, feature request, or enhancements to http://support.vivoware.com

Thanks, when I mentioned the AS journal API, what I was suggesting was an identical/alternate API call be created to mimic AS so that the 3rd party modules already created with integration into AS could also hook into VS without any modification or work required by the 3rd party developers (and existing owners of those modules could consider migration to VS and retain the functionality).
I'll spend some time with VS and no doubt be back with many questions and/or suggestions, at first glance it seems groups can't be members of other groups - is that right?
Thanks, TJ
